Dual Layer DVDs

Nearly all DVD players manufactured since the format's widespread adoption support dual layer (DVD9) playback, as it's part of the official DVD-Video specification. However, some very old or low-quality players may briefly pause during the layer transition, and burned dual layer discs can occasionally have lower compatibility than commercially replicated ones.

Burning a single dual layer DVD typically takes longer than a single layer disc due to the added data and layer-switching process, often adding several extra minutes per disc. DVD5 is a single layer disc with 4.7GB of storage, while DVD9 is a dual layer disc holding 8.5GB, nearly double the capacity. DVD9 is typically used for longer video content, higher bitrate encoding, multiple audio tracks, or bonus features that wouldn't fit on a single layer disc.

A dual layer DVD (DVD9) holds approximately 8.5GB of data, compared to 4.7GB on a single layer DVD5. This additional capacity is ideal for longer-form video content, higher-resolution audio, extended bonus material, or projects requiring more data than a single layer disc can accommodate.

Dual layer DVDs can store standard definition video encoded at higher bitrates and some upscaled or lightly compressed HD content, but they are not a true high-definition format like Blu-ray. The extra 8.5GB capacity is most commonly used for longer SD runtimes, bonus features, or higher-resolution audio tracks.
